How long does it take to solve Sudoku?
There is no single expected time for a Sudoku puzzle. The starting grid, the deductions you know and whether you use help all affect the attempt. A difficulty label alone is not enough to predict a finishing time.
What should a beginner aim for?
Start by explaining your placements and completing a puzzle correctly. If you are learning the rules, stopping to check a lesson is part of that practice. Try the beginner course before treating the timer as a target.
Why two puzzles at the same level can take different times
You might recognise a useful move immediately in one grid and overlook it in another. A mistake that needs undoing also changes the time. Difficulty names belong to the publisher's grading system; an Easy puzzle from one source need not match an Easy puzzle elsewhere. Our difficulty guide helps you choose a level on this site.
Make a useful personal comparison
- Use puzzles from the same source and difficulty.
- Record whether you used notes, hints or an answer key.
- Separate first attempts from puzzles you have solved before.
- Note interruptions and decide consistently whether your recorded time includes them.
- Look at several attempts before deciding that your pace has changed.
Keep a small solving log
Write one line after each session: puzzle date or identifier, difficulty, completed or unfinished, time if you measured it, help used and one observation. For example: “Medium; unfinished; checked a lesson; revisit the top-right box.” An unfinished attempt can still tell you what to practise.
What if I have only a short break?
Choose a comfortable level and stop when you need to. On paper, mark the area you want to revisit. You do not need to finish a whole grid for the session to be worthwhile. The focus guide includes a simple way to leave a clear restart point.
When you want to work on speed
Use the speed-practice routine to review where you pause, or follow the four-week practice plan. Choose a puzzle through daily Sudoku or the site's generated printable downloads.
