Sudoku tips for beginners

Keep this checklist beside a puzzle when you know the rules but are unsure what to do next. If you are starting from scratch, visit Sudoku for beginners first.

Before entering a digit

1. Choose a row, column or box with only a few gaps.
2. List the digits missing from that group.
3. For an empty cell, check which options its other two groups rule out.
4. Ask why the remaining digit is forced. If you cannot explain it yet, leave the cell open.

The beginner course provides guided practice. You can consult an existing lesson while working without having to finish the whole course first.

After entering a digit

1. Check that you entered it in the intended cell.
2. Check the full row, column and box for a conflict.
3. Remove that digit from notes in those groups where it is no longer possible.
4. Look again at the affected areas before moving elsewhere.

When notes seem to give an answer

Ask whether you recorded all the candidates. One written note can mean “one option remains” or simply “I have only checked one option.” Recalculate the cell if you are unsure. Do not remove a candidate from an unrelated cell just because the digit appears elsewhere in the puzzle.

When you repeat the same scan

Move to another group or inspect where one missing digit could go. If you notice a contradiction, follow the mistake checklist. If you see no contradiction but no move, use the stuck guide.

After the session

Write one specific next step, such as “check notes before relying on them.” Choose a comfortable difficulty for your next attempt; you do not need to beat a time limit. Read how solving times vary if the timer is distracting you.
