Sudoku apps for beginners
A useful first app lets you see what you entered, undo a mistake and understand the next step. Try those actions before choosing by a rating or the number of puzzles advertised.
We make Sudoku a Day. This guide combines a practical trial checklist with the linked official product information, checked on 11 September 2026.
Try these controls first
- Choose a level: find the difficulty selector and start with the easiest available option. Labels differ between publishers.
- Enter and erase: check that the selected cell is clear and that you can correct an accidental entry.
- Add notes: make sure small candidates look different from final digits. Find out whether the app updates them automatically.
- Use available help: check whether it explains a deduction you can follow, and whether that help requires a purchase.
- Adjust the view: try the text, sound and display controls available to you. Check timing settings if the timer distracts you.
Choose a learning format
| You want to… | An option to investigate |
|---|---|
| Learn before installing | Our interactive beginner course introduces the rules and first moves in the browser. |
| Learn inside an iPhone or iPad app | Good Sudoku describes hints and learning assistance. Read the comparison for the current offer. |
| Follow a browser learning sequence | Sudoku.coach's campaign provides chapters and exercises. See the comparison. |
| Start a daily routine | Try our Easy browser board or read about the separate iPhone app. |
Watch what the assistance does
A tool may mark an error, fill candidates or reveal an answer. Those are different kinds of help. After using it, explain one move in your own words. If the explanation remains unclear, return to a guided lesson rather than increasing the difficulty simply because the grid is complete.
Keep the first choice reversible
You can try a free version or learn with a browser course before deciding about upgrades. Use the free-versus-paid checklist to identify what a purchase would add. On paper, keep a rules sheet beside an Easy printable.
